Amusements; Thrills

This particular series explores the visual culture of structured recreation – the imagery of fairs, theme parks, boardwalks, arcades and carnivals. The pleasures of these rides, games and displays are at times contradictory: the activities are simultaneously ritualistic and spontaneous, repetitive and thrilling. The paintings are a response to the sensory chaos of these environments – their sense of dislocation – and to their surprising moments of ordered beauty.
